Selma Update #1

Day one, Wednesday:

Today was my first time flying in anything other than a Cessna type aircraft. It was a lot of fun.

I flew from South Bend to Detroit to Memphis to Montgomery AL.

I met up with Emily in Memphis and we met up with Heather at the Montgomery airport.

We waited there for the Grays who had somehow mistakenly driven to the wrong airport at first.

As we arrived in Selma Pastor Gray pointed out many things about the area and city's history.

The plan was for us to stay in the Mans, however there was some work being done to it and it was not quite ready. So for tonight we are staying in the church building right next door.

Day two, Thursday:

We were allowed to sleep in a little bit.

Once the three of us where up and had had breakfast we had team devotions.

Let me pause here and let you meet the team.

There is Heather Moore from Elkhart, IN who has the role of team leader. Emily McFarland from Winchester, KS and myself Christopher Dean. I am also from Elkhart.

After devotions we did a little bit of preparation for the VBS (Vacation Bible School) which starts Monday.

Then we explored the church building a little bit. The church is small but very nice.

The Grays came over to the church later in the morning as they had a little bit of car trouble first thing.

Once that was all straitened out Mrs. Gray took us and the kids to Wal-Mart for some of their shopping and run a few errands.

The afternoon was spent resting in the evening we walked over to the Gray's house for dinner as Mr. And Mrs. Gray took off for the evening on their weekly “date night”.

It seem that some of the children have adopted me as a climbing tree.

Grace, James, Rachael, me, and Abby.

Day three, Friday:

After team devotions we went to the Grays to help watch the kids while pastor Gray went to an important meeting

something having to do with the City.

The afternoon was devoted to more preparation of the VBS.

The evening was spent fellowshipping with the ECHO team who spent the night here on their way back to Indiana.

Day four, Saturday

Got up with the ECHO team @ 4:30 to see them safely off.

Then we went back to bed and slept in a little.

We finished going over the VBS curriculum. It appears that we will be helping with the preschool age kids for VBS. That assignment is subject change.

This afternoon we went a place called Gee's Bend. It is a ferry that was very influential in some of the voting rights struggles here in the south.

Things to pray for:

  1. Pray for the VBS starting on Monday especially for a strong gospel message to go out.

  2. As a team, pray that we will be an encouragement to the older congregation here in Selma.

  3. Pray that we will continue to be a blessing to the Grays as they are expecting their ninth child!

  4. We pray along with the church for good contacts within the community especially through the VBS

  5. Pray that God will give us strength and we will grow in the Lord as a team

  6. For Avery Gray the eldest of the Grays children as he joins the second ECHO team on Monday

News Flash!!

In a couple of weeks I will be going on a mission trip to Selma, Alabama through the Reformed Presbyterian Church. As many of you may know this will be my first mission trip of any kind. I am excited! For some time, several friends have been strongly encouraging me to go on a missions trip. Being able to go on this mission trip is a real blessing from the Lord. He has blessed me with a job that is flexible enough for me to take time off for this trip.

You may be wondering why I will be spending half the month of June (11-25) in Alabama. After doing a little bit of door-to-door literature distribution in my neighborhood with my local church, I wanted to do more outreach of some kind. This trip will be a way for me to help spread the Gospel - that is not to say that one must travel to some far off place to share the Gospel. We should be able to answer the call when other brethren ask.

I will be going down with a team of at least two other people. One of whom is from my church in Elkhart. Please pray for us as we will be helping this small congregation make new contacts in the area. The team will be doing this by helping the congregation organize and coordinate a vacation Bible school. We also will be doing some physical work around the church building.

Would you please consider supporting me as I go on this mission trip both through prayer, and if the Lord leads you, financial support? The cost of the trip is $900 (this includes the cost of the International Family Conference in July) Travel costs will be around $350 to go to Alabama. Tax deductible donations can either be given through  RPMissions.org or through the Elkhart Reformed Presbyterian Church.

Thank you for your prayers. May the Lord bless and keep you.

Christopher Dean

I said there would be pics. . .

Here are the pics of what was my car.

The side I was first hit on.

The drivers side that was hit after I did a  180.

Here you can kind of see how much the door is into the seat.

Two years. One year. Three seconds.

Thats right it has been two years.
No not two years since my last post.
I have been working for two years as of  last week. The apprenticeship is going very well. I just got done with the semester with about a B average. For one class I had to build a radio. That was rather fun. except that I put off building it until the week before it was due. I seem to be struggling a lot in the area of putting things off till the last minute.

One year ago I bought a car. A Cavalier. A few problems with it but all most of them were fixed. The next item on the fix list was going to be the headgaskit.
That changed in about three seconds this morning on the way to work.
I was crossing U.S. 30, wich is a divided highway,
got across one lane of traffic looked for cars coming the other way. Everything looked clear. I started to continue across the highway and than BOOM! My car was struck on the passenger side spun around facing the direction I came from and got hit a second time on the drivers side by the same car.
Thank the Lord that nither the other driver nor I was hurt.

So I need a new car now.
I will have pictures up soon of the car.
