Day one, Wednesday:
Today was my first time flying in
anything other than a Cessna type aircraft. It was a lot of fun.
I flew from South Bend to Detroit to
Memphis to Montgomery AL.
I met up with Emily in Memphis and we
met up with Heather at the Montgomery airport.
We waited there for the Grays who had
somehow mistakenly driven to the wrong airport at first.
As we arrived in Selma Pastor Gray
pointed out many things about the area and city's history.
The plan was for us to stay in the
Mans, however there was some work being done to it and it was not
quite ready. So for tonight we are staying in the church building
right next door.
Day two, Thursday:
We were allowed to sleep in a little
bit.
Once the three of us where up and had
had breakfast we had team devotions.
Let me pause here and let you meet the
team.
There is Heather Moore from Elkhart, IN
who has the role of team leader. Emily McFarland from Winchester, KS
and myself Christopher Dean. I am also from Elkhart.
After devotions we did a little bit of
preparation for the VBS (Vacation Bible School) which starts Monday.
Then we explored the church building a
little bit. The church is small but very nice.
The Grays came over to the church later
in the morning as they had a little bit of car trouble first thing.
Once that was all straitened out Mrs.
Gray took us and the kids to Wal-Mart for some of their shopping and
run a few errands.
The afternoon was spent resting in the
evening we walked over to the Gray's house for dinner as Mr. And
Mrs. Gray took off for the evening on their weekly “date night”.
It seem that some of the children have
adopted me as a climbing tree.
Grace, James, Rachael, me, and Abby.
Day three, Friday:
After team devotions we went to the
Grays to help watch the kids while pastor Gray went to an important
meeting
something having to do with the City.
The afternoon was devoted to more
preparation of the VBS.
The evening was spent fellowshipping
with the ECHO team who spent the night here on their way back to
Indiana.
Day four, Saturday
Got up with the ECHO team @ 4:30 to see
them safely off.
Then we went back to bed and slept in a
little.
We finished going over the VBS
curriculum. It appears that we will be helping with the preschool age
kids for VBS. That assignment is subject change.
This afternoon we went a place called
Gee's Bend. It is a ferry that was very influential in some of the
voting rights struggles here in the south.
Things to pray for:
Pray for the VBS starting on
Monday especially for a strong gospel message to go out.
As a team, pray that we will be an
encouragement to the older congregation here in Selma.
Pray that we will continue to be a
blessing to the Grays as they are expecting their ninth child!
We pray along with the church for
good contacts within the community especially through the VBS
Pray that God will give us
strength and we will grow in the Lord as a team
For Avery Gray the eldest of the
Grays children as he joins the second ECHO team on Monday
